In his statement, Governor Yusuf highlighted the significant milestones achieved by his administration in promoting environmental sustainability and improving the livelihoods of local communities. He announced the completion of all groundwork necessary to commence civil works at the erosion control site, marking a pivotal moment in addressing the persistent environmental challenges faced by the Bulbula-Gayawa community.

“Today marks a new chapter in our journey toward addressing the persistent environmental challenges that have plagued Bulbula-Gayawa for decades,” the Governor stated. He acknowledged the severe impacts of gully erosion on the community, which has resulted in loss of life, farmland, and safety for children traveling to school. The erosion site has also become a hotspot for criminal activities, disrupting the peace and security of the area.

Governor Yusuf emphasized the administration’s determination to combat the erosion crisis as part of a broader mission to address land degradation, environmental risks, and climate impacts throughout the state. He outlined key initiatives already implemented and those planned for the future, stating, “Our efforts to address environmental challenges in Kano State are tireless.”

The Governor shared that significant steps have been taken to combat illegal sand mining and restore degraded lands. Notable projects include the rehabilitation of shelterbelts at Yanbawa and Sabon Garin Ginzo, the restoration of over 21,261 hectares of land, and the establishment of woodlot plantations. These initiatives are aimed at mitigating desertification and promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Regarding the Bulbula-Gayawa erosion control project, the Governor announced that the project will involve the construction of reinforced concrete channels of varying dimensions, with bioremediation measures to prevent further land degradation. “These measures will stabilize the soil, manage runoff, and ultimately reclaim lost land while reducing threats to lives and property,” he explained.

In addressing community safety, Governor Yusuf noted the collaboration with security agencies to conduct regular patrols and the installation of solar lighting to deter criminal activities in the area.

Additionally, the administration is implementing community support programs to revive livelihoods, which include providing agricultural inputs and skill-building initiatives to empower families.

“This administration is committed to ensuring that no community is left behind,” the Governor affirmed. “Today, we are here to confirm that your voices have been heard, and we will tirelessly work to restore safety, security, and prosperity to Bulbula-Gayawa and its surrounding areas.”

He concluded by commending the efforts of all stakeholders, including community leaders, religious leaders, youth groups, and community associations, for their resilience and commitment to the success of the administration’s initiatives.
