Kano-ACReSAL Visits Center for Dryland Agriculture to Enhance Community Revolving Fund Productivity

Kano, Nigeria – In a strategic effort to enhance the productivity of the Community Revolving Fund (CRF) loans among beneficiary communities, Kano-ACReSAL has conducted an exposure visit to the Center for Dryland Agriculture (CDA) at Bayero University Kano (BUK). This visit is part of a sustainability plan aimed at developing the project beneficiary communities.

Led by the State Project Coordinator, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, the team comprised project staff who sought guidance in implementing CRF activities effectively within Kano State. Dr. Hashim emphasized that the fund allocated for this initiative is designed to transform the lives of rural communities through agricultural value chains, underscoring the importance of exploring reliable avenues to ensure the fund’s sustainability.

The selection of CDA/BUK for this partnership was intentional, given its historical success in various aspects of dryland management, particularly in greenhouse management and operations. “Our goal is to address the major challenges affecting the state’s environment through the CRF approach,” Dr. Hashim stated. He highlighted that communities would be trained in producing compost manure from waste, alongside learning greenhouse management techniques to pilot the initiative.

Dr. Hashim commended the Geography Department and CDA for their unwavering support to Kano-ACReSAL, acknowledging their contributions to the project’s success.

In response, Prof. Murtala Muhammad Badamasi, the coordinator in charge of training and a geospatial analyst at CDA, welcomed the visit. He noted the shared objectives between ACReSAL and CDA, both operating under the World Bank framework, which advocates for leveraging projects like ACReSAL to create sustainable investment pathways.

Prof. Badamasi further elaborated on CDA’s collaborative efforts, stating that the center utilizes the expertise of the university’s staff to support various activities, including translation services in multiple languages. He highlighted the center’s commitment to best practices and partnerships with international research institutes to fulfill its mandate.

The visiting team, accompanied by Prof. Badamasi and colleagues, including Engr. Mustapha Bello, Dr. Ummi Khaltum (Environmentalist), and Dr. Abdulwahab Muhammad (Climate Change Expert), toured the CDA facilities. They explored the laboratory and greenhouse areas, gaining practical insights into greenhouse management.
