The visit was designed to educate Youth Corps members about climate change and their critical role in addressing environmental challenges. It also aimed to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
During the event, experts delivered presentations on essential topics such as pollution control, waste management, afforestation, and the vital role of women in climate action. A key aspect of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, which targets environmental issues in Northern Nigeria, was highlighted. The “Community Climate Resilience” component focuses on providing real-time environmental risk communication to communities, promoting positive environmental behaviors.
Dr. Hashim announced plans to establish a Climate Change Community Development Service (CDS) Group under the NYSC. This initiative aims to engage corps members in various climate actions, awareness campaigns, waste management, and environmental advocacy. He assured participants that the Ministry has structured activities to ensure their active contribution to environmental sustainability in Kano State.
With the backing of Governor Yusuf, the state is implementing several environmental projects, including cleanup exercises, sustainable waste management initiatives, pollution control measures, and the revival of compost manure plants to create youth employment opportunities.
NYSC State Coordinator Mrs. Halima Muhammad Abdulkarim expressed her support for the initiative, promising full cooperation from the NYSC, which already has CDS groups established across all 44 Local Government Areas. The sensitization program successfully enhanced corps members’ awareness of climate change and environmental action, encouraging their active participation in sustainability efforts for future generations.
