In a bold move to combat climate change and enhance environmental resilience, the Kano State Government, led by His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has launched the Three Million Trees Planting Initiative (3MTP). Announced by Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, the State Project Coordinator for the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape Kano (ACReSAL) project, the initiative aims to plant three million trees over the next year.
During a press conference, Dr. Hashim emphasized the critical importance of the initiative, noting that it addresses pressing environmental challenges in Kano, including deteriorating air quality and increased carbon emissions. “Trees are essential to our community. They provide clean air, regulate temperatures, prevent soil erosion, and enhance the beauty of our surroundings,” he stated.
The 3MTP aims to plant 20,000 seedlings along 25 major roads, including prominent routes like Katsina Road and BUK Road, improving urban air quality and providing shade for residents. Additionally, the initiative plans to distribute 980,000 seedlings to local communities, tertiary institutions, and public organizations, promoting community involvement and ownership of green spaces.
As part of a broader afforestation strategy, the government intends to utilize farmer-led natural regeneration and establish new orchards, targeting an additional 2 million trees to tackle issues of desertification and food security.
The program will collaborate with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to mobilize residents, with training sessions starting soon to equip them with tree planting knowledge. The initiative also includes measures for monitoring and enforcement, such as geotagging each tree planted to track its growth and protect it from illegal destruction.
In a show of commitment, Governor Yusuf has participated in multiple tree-planting campaigns within his first year in office. The 3MTP is not merely a government initiative; it is a call to action for all citizens of Kano to contribute to a greener environment.
By forging partnerships with various organizations including unions and professional groups, the Kano State Government aims to foster widespread participation in the 3MTP, reinforcing the notion that every resident can make a difference in the fight against climate change.
As the initiative unfolds, it reflects a significant step towards environmental sustainability and a healthier future for Kano.
