INTRODUCTION:

In the heart of Northern Nigeria, where the challenges of climate change and urban development converge, the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has emerged as a beacon of hope. Under a collaborative effort between the Federal Government, the Nineteen Northern States & FCT and the World Bank. ACReSAL has set out to transform the landscape of Northern Nigeria.

Background The Component C of the ACReSAL project seeks to fortify the institutional and policy foundation for integrated landscape management. In response to the impending threat of urban flooding predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Kano-ACReSAL has joined hand with the State Ministry of Environment for the 2023 Annual Drainage Clearance Exercise within the metroplis.

Environmental Challenges:

The environmental challenges faced by Kano State are multifaceted, ranging from flood and soil erosion, water and air pollution and urban solid waste, deforestation and desertification.. The devastating impact of flooding, in particular, has prompted proactive measures to mitigate the risks and protect the lives and properties of the people through the urban drainage clearance exercise.

Flood Prevention Efforts:

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Kano-ACReSAL took the lead in evacuating major and minor drainages across the eight metropolitan Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Kano State. The project, which covered 28 kilometers (60ha) of drainage networks within the metropolitan LGAs, aimed to complement the State Government efforts.

Recommendation:

While celebrating the success of the 2023 Drainage Clearance Exercise, Kano-ACReSAL is urged to consider for the continues support going forward.
