ACReSAL Project Overview
The ACReSAL project is a six-year initiative supported by the World Bank aimed at restoring landscapes in Northern Nigeria. This region faces significant challenges including high poverty, low literacy rates, environmental fragility, conflict, natural resource degradation, poor agricultural productivity, climate risks, desertification, limited technology access, and weak institutional capacity.
To address these complex issues, the Federal Ministry of Environment leads the implementation, collaborating closely with the Ministries of Water Resources, and Agriculture and Rural Development. ACReSAL is a multi-sectoral and multi-institutional effort spanning environment, agriculture, and water resources sectors. Its primary goals are combating desertification, restoring degraded lands, and conserving special ecosystems crucial for agriculture and biodiversity.
The project targets improving water availability for agricultural needs, mitigating climate change impacts on agricultural productivity, and enhancing the livelihoods of rural farmers in selected states. ACReSAL aligns with Nigeria's broader commitment, led by President Muhammad Buhari, to restore 4 million hectares of degraded agricultural land by 2030.
By 2028, ACReSAL aims to restore 1 million hectares, promoting climate-resilient landscape management practices for sustainable environmental outcomes and increased agricultural yields, particularly benefiting women and youth groups in rural areas.
Overall, ACReSAL seeks to strengthen Nigeria's capacity for integrated climate-resilient landscape management, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability and agricultural development in northern Nigeria.
Our Vision
To have strong practices and policies on ecological restoration and a climate change resilient community.
Our Mission
To address environmental challenges arising from Climate Change and poor land-use practices in Northern Nigeria.
Project Development Objective (PDO)
The PDO of Kano ACReSAL is to increase the implementation of sustainable landscapes management practices in targeted watersheds in northern Nigeria and strengthen Nigeria’s long-term enabling environment for integrated climate-resilient landscape management.
Kano ACReSAL
The Kano ACReSAL Project is a part of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative, a six-year World Bank Assisted Project aimed at addressing the challenges of sustainable landscape management and climate change in Nineteen States and the FCT of Nigeria. The project recognizes that climate change is a significant national security threat that has profound impacts on natural resources, ecosystems, and biodiversity, particularly in the semi-arid regions of Northern Nigeria.
The 19 northern states targeted by the ACReSAL project, including FCT Abuja, face multiple socio-economic challenges such as high poverty rates, low literacy levels, a fragile and conflict-ridden environment, degradation of natural resources, poor agricultural productivity, climate risks, desertification, limited access to modern technology, and weak institutional capacity.
The primary objective of the Kano ACReSAL Project is to increase the implementation of sustainable landscape management practices in targeted watersheds within Kano State. By adopting climate-resilient approaches, the project aims to strengthen the long-term enabling environment for integrated landscape management in Nigeria.
